African Leadership Global (a collaboration between Gen A Consultancy and Strong Enterprises Ltd) has completed the first phase of their research seeking to define a new dimension to African Leadership. The first report will be published on the African Leadership Global (ALG) website next week.
The countdown has begun!
“All this has been possible with the professionalism of our ALG teams in Ghana, South Africa and the UK. Perhaps, even more importantly, our thanks go to those leaders with African heritage who enthusiastically stepped forward to share their stories.” Nicola Strong
A critical aspect of the Stories of African Leadership research project has been to collect African stories with a view to increasing the representation of the Global South data. In particular, data lakes and data trusts applied to new technologies, algorithms and generative learning systems worldwide. There are a number initiatives addressing the current data gap but it is going to many more initiatives and organisations to take deliberate care to do this ethically. It is clear from the progress made to date that much more work needs to be done in studying the emerging guidelines and frameworks, appreciate the nuances of indigenous knowledge, the social cultural norms of a community and the legal subtleties of the relationships between the regional chiefs and the national political systems across the African Continent.
Collecting data has also raised the issue of privacy and protecting the details that are personal to our storytellers. Part of this has been achieved through the collection process following the discipline of social research. Also, protection can be achieved through the handling of the data itself. For example how it has been stored and reported. More details can be found in our report. Here in the UK, the Alan Turing Institute has brought together a group of people from around the world to look at how to build a Trustworthy Digital Infrastructure for Identity Systems specifically focused on the Global South.
Suffice to say, as a researcher, it has been fascinating to take the time to explore how technology can create new ways to allow us observe data in completely new ways. The real test will be whether this beginning will help to bring balance to the authentic representation of leadership a vast and growing economy with a new generation of future thinking leaders.
The report called “Stories of African Leadership” will be released on the 31 October 2024.
